IWC Big Pilot 5004-02

Terug in de vroege jaren 2000, IWC bracht een wit goud versie van haar horloge Big Pilot's: verwijzing 5004-02. Sceptisch IWC fans, die wilde weten waarom ze premium prijzen moeten betalen voor een luxe horloge die ook kan worden gekocht in roestvrij staal (en dat is in wezen een instrument horloge, aangezien het is bedoeld om te worden gedragen door piloten), aten hun woorden als zij zagen de 5004-02 in persoon. Omdat dit was niet zomaar een wit goud luxe horloge. Het was een IWC. En IWC niet standaard afwerking doen.
De IWC Big Pilot 5004-02 is een masterclass in materialen. Het witte goud behuizing (46,2 mm, serieus ter rechtvaardiging van de 'Big' in 'Big Pilot') is warm en zwaar, en wanneer genomen in combinatie met het witte goud uur markers (het horloge heeft zowel toegepast indexen en Arabische cijfers) geeft het geheel wat een duidelijk up-markt voelen. En de 'ardoise' dial moet worden gezien in persoon om het te geloven.
Ardoise is IWC naam voor 'slate'-al leisteen is niet een woord dat recht doet aan de kleur. Shimmering, vele lagen, maar toch matte en plat, het is de perfecte aanvulling op een horloge dat weinig in de weg van de versiering heeft. Op het eerste gezicht, de IWC Big Pilot 5004-02 is een grote grijze gezicht aangevuld met een gangreserve (3:00) en de datum venster (06:00). Maar als je het op je pols, en krijgen in het licht, het samenspel van kleuren en texturen op die ardoise wijzerplaat transformeert het in een ding van diepte en schoonheid. Voeg de heldere reflecties en diepe schaduwen die rimpel over de perfect afgewerkte kast, en je hebt een piloot horloge dat is ook een spectaculaire dagelijks stuk kreeg.
De krokodil riem, in het zwart, is doorboord dicht bij de nokken met twee metalen studs. Het is een mooi tintje, waarbij de militaire functie van het stuk herinnert, zonder afbreuk te doen aan zijn verfijnde uitstraling. Het verklaart ook waarom de fans van IWC Big Pilot horloges zijn vaak ook fans van Panerai . Dezelfde forse afmetingen en leer-en-metaal esthetische informeren PAM evenals Big piloten, en beide hebben een achtergrond in de echte militair instrument horloges. De IWC Big Pilot II, bijvoorbeeld, werd speciaal gemaakt voor de RAF , en duurde in actieve dienst voor meer dan 30 jaar.
De IWC Big Pilot 5004-02 is waterdicht tot 60 m, en dat leren riem wordt vastgemaakt met een double-voudig wit-gouden gesp. Zorg ervoor dat je het weg te houden van onderdompeling, of je serieus het leven en de looks van de band te verminderen.
Dus, is er een rechtvaardiging voor het kopen van een IWC Big Pilot 5004-02 in wit goud, in plaats van, zeg, een Big Pilot 5009 in roestvrij staal? Absoluut. Als je niet van plan om daadwerkelijk te nemen van u in de cockpit van een Spitfire, dan is het warmer, zwakkere edelmetaal zorgt voor een meer vooraanstaande ervaring van horloge een piloot. Doe er eentje om en je het gevoel dat de generaal-majoor van uw eigen luchtmacht.

Hamilton Khaki Tachmyler

The Hamilton Khaki Tachmyler is een chronograaf uitgerust met high-precision het meten functie van de tijd en afstand, die voldoet aan de behoeften van de sport en acrobatische piloten.

Een geval 44 mm stalen behuizing in een kwadrant wiens counters herinneren die vliegtuigen cockpits.

Nieuwe Seiko Kinetic

Het verzamelen van watersportclub met Kinetic bewegingen, vind ik het tijdschrift Horloges Van april Pols, die tot Baseworld werd gepresenteerd met een aantal innovaties.
Het tijdschrift werd aangekondigd in de preview-Diver SKA42P1 met geval sub 200 meter met een gangreserve indicator door te drukken op de knop, onafhankelijk van zes maanden bij volledige lading.
De zaak, unidirectionele roterende bezel en de armband Marine Sport Door Seiko zwarte kegel alle IP-verdragen.
Schroef kroon en bodem, en sluiten met veiligheids-knop.
In de collectie Neo Sport in plaats van de twee modellen met roestvrij staal sub 100 meter; één is uitgerust met beweging Kinetic en bezel, ook getrakteerd IP zwart, heeft twee-weg beweging, de andere met vaste bezel is in plaats daarvan uitgerust met meer en Seiko automatisch uurwerk.

Longines Heritage Militaire

Als je al sinds 1832 de productie uurwerken bent geweest, is het begrijpelijk te voelen alsof je het allemaal hebt gezien. Het meest waarschijnlijk is er slecht en goede keuzes zijn geweest, maar nu kun je kiezen uit het verleden met een hoger niveau van wijsheid achteraf.

Ontwerp verstandig deze nieuwe Longines werd geïnspireerd door modellen circuleren tussen een tijdperk waarin horloges werden in eerste instantie beginnen de voorkeur boven zakhorloges. Deze mid-overgang uurwerken waren erg in de mode tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog, omdat zakhorloges waren niet praktisch in een gevecht. Dus in wezen deze horloges worden afgeslankt zakhorloges met dunne lippen gesoldeerd op de zaak. Er waren andere grote horology merken dat dit soort uurwerken uitgegeven, zoals: Omega en Girard-Perregaux. Maar, typisch fabrikanten kozen hun merknaam niet te beschikken over deze zogenaamde "trench horloges".

De ronde 44mm satijn-geborsteld roestvrij-stalen kast, met een platte ring en ver uit elkaar lugs. Er is een geribbelde kroon, in plaats van een grote ui stijl kroon, zoals te zien op de 1918 model dat de meeste van de functies op deze uurwerk geïnspireerd. En om de zaak veilig te stellen voor ongewenste elementen het is gedekt door een krasbestendig saffierglas met meerdere lagen anti-reflecterende coating.

De wijzerplaat op deze Longines werd rechtstreeks geïnspireerd door een horloge ze oorspronkelijk debuteerde, terug in 1918. Hoewel ze het kleurenschema hebben omgekeerd. Terwijl de 1918 model had een totale witte wijzerplaat met zwarte accenten. Deze heruitgave heeft een overwegend matte zwarte wijzerplaat met witte accenten. Nogmaals dank aan de constante herinneringen lopen door de gangpaden van de historische collectie van het Museum Longines, aan het bedrijf Saint-Imier hoofdkwartier.

De tijd wordt tentoongesteld op een mat zwarte wijzerplaat via witte Arabische cijfers en een witte minuten spoorlijn ring, rondom de vaste ring. Deze cijfers werden met de hand beschilderd en gecoat met SuperLuminova, voor een betere leesbaarheid. Er is ook een sub-seconde wijzerplaat, afgestemd op de 6 uur positie, die naar beneden opent naar een witte diafragma datumvenster. Het merk Longines is licht afgedrukt onder de 12 uur positie en de tijd wordt opgemerkt door elegante Breguet-type handen, met een kathedraal design.

The upright Golden Clipper

When collecting watches it's often the case that one particular brand is not too well represented and sometimes just for the fact that you never got round to it. And in the case of Bulova that's probably right in my case, though that said I did have a Bulova Accutron 218 many years ago which I sold on at the time as payment for another model.

However recently I bought an earlier Bulova from 1970 and for no other reason than I particularly liked the rather unusual case and dial layout. Note the luminous infill hour and minute hands, the red seconds sweep hand and the luminous dot markers at each applied minute marker, gives a clearly defined dial (note the luminous material no longer active). I particularly like the different background shades for the Day and the Date wheels, which aids clarity. And of course how could you miss the vertical Day and Date @6 which sets it apart from most watches and if honest the main reason for my purchase. The case is in polished Stainless Steel and oval in shape and whilst I've heard it called the UFO case, though maybe a personal observation by an owner and certainly not official, it is in fact quite a rare shape for a Gents model and a very decent size at approximately 37.5 mm wide and 39 mm lug to lug, and as a result it sits well on the wrist.
It also has the Bulova Automatic Swiss 17 jewel movement so is well specified, though from the dial you wouldn't know it was automatic, as it's not printed on the dial, the only dial text being the “T -SWISS-T” mark and the large text Bulova name @12. For me however it's just the combination of all of these factors that I find uniquely interesting.

Golden Clipper model 11616 – 1970 “J” model Automatic in original box

Bulova produced a large number of watches over the years and amazingly eclectic variations were available in the 1970's but actually only a few models that featurde a vertical Day and Date display. Other were a 1972 Caravelle AK model and a 1973 Jet Star model 11634 with squared case and I'm delighted to say that my watch can be confirmed as the Golden Clipper model 11616 from 1970 (and the most expensive of the 4) and I attach an image from the 1970 McLeans Magazine advert running the Golden Clipper series and with the Stainless Steel 11616 model shown on the right. I note the advert text is sometimes difficult to read and has I think been misread in the MyBulova.com web site, but this clearer image shows it's definitely 11616. The 2nd marketing image is a newspaper clipping, which also shows this model as part of another Golden Clipper advert.
However it's always nice to have your watch model validated and with Bulova it's actually easier being a USA Brand when compared to most Swiss made watches, as the (USA) records are usually much better. But for the most comprehensive data I've seen, a visit to the mybulova.com web site and forum is very worth while being a mecca for Bulova owners, as it's a terrific source of information.
As to my new acquisition, I'm particularly pleased as it included the original Bulova watch box which is in very good condition. The watch itself was sold and described as 8/10 condition, though personally I might up that grading myself. Especially after checking out the movement which is in about as good a condition I've seen. Note the large italic B for Bulova cut out on the rotor which is a nice validation.

The movement is the 17 jewel 11ANACB automatic. Exterior wise after some careful and superficial cleaning with a small brush and cloth (no solvents used) the watch looks virtually as new. The stainless steel Kreisler Stelux bracelet signed Bulova is the original and in excellent condition and easily fit my wrist (the bracelet will fit up to approx 190 mm). For what is a relatively rare 45 years old vertical Day and Date @6 display Bulova Golden Clipper, the condition is pretty exceptional and has to be one of my best buys for a considerable time and I'm delighted.
An interesting fact about the 1970 Golden Clipper series is that Bulova ran a promotional campaign, where they commissioned Wilkinson Sword Company of London to produce a limited run of 100 presentation swords, one of which would be offered each of the first 100 customers buying this model. With an etched blade inscribed- “Bulova Golden Clipper – Presentation Award 1970” on one side and the Wilkinson Sword mark on the other. A promotional gift they may be, but they are full size, beautifully made and uniquely Wilkinson and actually pretty rare today!
In fact I could get one, but here in the UK importing such a sword might cause all sorts of problems, what with our Draconian blade laws. So whilst it would be nice to have the completeness of the collection (perhaps all 4 watch models plus the sword), I can probably do without the hassle.
Condition wise this watch is really very good considering it's age and it's managed to pick up only two small dings (one on the case back and the other on the lower front of the case), but these are hardly noticeable, which is why I would grade it as good as I do.
Setting the Day and Date on some of these old Bulova models can be tricky and time consuming, as there is no “quick set” Date here. Basically it's by means of hands movement, backwards and forwards, then over the am/pm, back and forth etc. to get the Day, Date and Time as you would like. But that's the way it is and I'm OK with that. FP Journe Best Tourbillon Watches: An Insider's Look

The story started in Paris in 1977, when a 20-year-old watchmaker decided to create his own piece of best tourbillon watches simply to prove himself that he could do it. The watchmaker's name was François-Paul Journe . It took him several years, but in spite of everything he completed his first pocket luxury watch with a tourbillon that was never meant to be sold. It was in 1983. In fact, for that time such models, even the best tourbillon watches, were not the craze they are today because of the pernicious effect of a tourbillon on accuracy. In 1884, François-Paul trying to fix it created his first Remontoir d'Egalité thus attracting the attention of major collectors of high-end luxury watches like Eugen Gschwind.

In 1991, another tourbillon model was created – this time it was Journe's first wrist luxury watch. It was also equipped with a remontoir d'égalité regulating the delivery of energy to the balance wheel. However, it was not a new idea. Such brilliant watchmakers as Berthoud, Breguet, and Lépine already had it in mind. So what is so special in this FP Journe's patented device? Its lightness and, what's remarkable, the simplicity! Moreover, the remontoir d'égalité has a very cleverly mounted dead-beat seconds system allowing the seconds hand actually moves and dies every second (like in an accurate quartz watch movement). Amazingly, but it is just a natural remontoir's by-product! Our compliments to the great talent!

Movement

At the heart of the Les Originales Tradition beats a Sellita SW200-01, a Swiss Made mechanical automatic movement, one born out of necessity and the fires of change within the Swiss watch establishment, a fire that starts with ETA.

ETA is a Swiss movement manufacture and supplier to the majority of Swiss Made watch brands, they supply movements and partially constructed movements (ébauches). In 2002 they started the move that some considered as big a change as the quartz crisis of 1970, they were planning to stop supply of all movements and ébauches to anyone outside of the Swatch Group family (of which ETA is part). Since the announcement there has been back peddling, cartel law breaches and negotiated staged supply reductions. As it currently stands 2019 is the stated date when ETA will stop supply, but there has already been significant reduction in availability over the past few years.

With reduced availability of ETA movements and the eventual demise of all access to ETA movements for third parties, Sellita has become one of the primary companies for a wide selection of watchmakers who do not produce their own in-house movements. With Sellita's current track record of reliability and accuracy coupled with their previous experience performing outsourced assembly for ETA, I doubt this will trend will change anytime soon.

The SW200-1 is a near identical reproduction of the ETA 2824-2 (Sellita creates clones of ETA movements that are out of patent), the only difference is the addition of a single jewel (taking the count to 26) on the upper side of the barrel access, below the ratchet wheel. It has a beat of 28,000 semi-oscillations per hour (4Hz), it is a hacking movement (the second hand mechanically disengages to allow accurate setting) and it has a power reserver of 38 hours. It can be manually wound and has a quick date set.

Timing and accuracy has also been proven to be as good as ETA's, the SW200-01 (outside of COSC) has three standards (Standard, Elaboré and Prémium) ranging from +/- 20 seconds a day to +/- 10 seconds a day. My observations having worn this watch for several days (and on a winder overnight) was from +5 a day to +9 a day, a level of accuracy I am most happy with.

Rotary is in good company with this movement, having such contemporaries as Tag Heuer, ORIS, Christopher Ward and others opting to use the SW200-1 on a range of timepieces. For me (and a lot of watch manufacturers) Sellita movements are for all intense and purposes a straight swap for ETA.
